Botulinum toxin (BOTOX) therapy
Botulinum toxin (BOTOX) therapy is one of the methods used to reduce mimic wrinkles which acts on their main cause - mimetic muscles. Injections with botulinum chemically blocks the connections between nerves and muscles. Botulinum stops the nerve impulse so that it does not reach the muscle and does not stimulate it. Action of Botox covers only those muscles to which it was injected, whereas other muscles operate without changes. As a result facial expression does not change but at the same time wrinkles disappear. The procedure is most often applied to shallow the transverse and vertical folds, i.e. the so-called lion wrinkles. Botulinum toxin injected in a small dose to appropriate muscle tissue causes a mild paralysis of muscles responsible for wrinkles on the forehead and near the eyes and thereby it prevents the muscles from contracting and thus counteracts wrinkling and folding of the skin. Anti-wrinkle treatment with the use of Botox is applied to eliminate wrinkles between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet or laugh lines between the eyes”.
It should be taken into consideration that it may be performed only by trained physicians, since proper execution requires appropriate knowledge and precision. The procedure lasts for a short time and is almost painless. In our practice we anaesthetise skin with a cream containing locally acting compound. The effect of botulinum toxin treatment lasts for approx. 6 months or sometimes longer. Wrinkles disappear gradually after 2-3 days to 2 weeks after the procedure.
This methods is safe, because the action of the drug can be reversed and does not cause any side effects or allergies. Return to normal activity is possible just after the procedure. Only directly after the procedure local redness may appear. Procedures should be repeated every 4 months to maintain long-term effect. Each repeated Botox injection prolongs the duration of the effects and thus further treatments may be performed in longer periods of time without decreased effectiveness of the therapy.
