Allergology is a branch of medicine dealing with diseases caused by abnormal reaction of the body to allergens.

Allergens include substances of plant and animal origin as well as various simple chemical compounds of haptenic nature, e.g. medicines. Body reaction to the contact with allergen may be slight (itching, watery eyes), sometimes more severe (shortness of breath, swelling of the face) and rarely dangerous and life-threatening.

Division of allergens:

  • inhaled, e.g. house dust;
  • food, i.e. those that enter the body with food, e.g. egg white, chocolate, citrus fruits, milk and others;
  • contact that cause an allergic reaction after direct contact with the skin, e.g. latex, metals;
  • some medicines, e.g. especially antibiotics;
  • Allergy to insect venom is a particular type of allergy. After being stung, a person with normal sensitivity to venom feels burning and pain, whereas.

Like all diseases, allergy is diagnosed on the basis of the patient’s history, i.e. a talk with a patient during which a physician obtains information on the symptoms, their duration and nature, as well as of physical examination (e.g. looking at skin lesions or audible symptoms of bronchospasm) and of additional tests, such as laboratory tests or allergic tests. Sometimes spirometry may be necessary.

Skin tests - tests used in diagnostics of allergy based on the phenomenon of immediate hypersensitivity (the effect of administrated allergen is immediate). Skin tests are one of the most frequently performed tests in the diagnostics of allergy.

Skin tests are one of the basic diagnostic method in diagnostics of allergy. They allow to determine IgE-mediated reactions in the skin. IgE antibodies against allergens, which cause an allergic reaction, are present in the patient. Administered allergen binds with specific IgE (antibody against a particular allergen) on the surface of mastocytes (cells, which represents the antigen) which leads to the release of histamine (substance accumulated in the granules of mastocytes), which in turn causes reaction in the skin triggering formation of a blister and erythema located around it.

Tests have various profiles. Allergens that can be tested include i.a
